Part 4FGeorge's
Heavenly Pit
George would be happy! He never wanted anything
more than a great place to fish where kids and friends
could enjoy being on the water. Close by. Not too far
from home. Secure. Beautiful. Protected. A work in constant
progress. Always something to do there. |

Stocking, feeding, fertilizing, grading, aerating,
filling. Planting fish attractors. Plenty of work. Plenty of
fish! Too bad he's no longer here in the flesh to see and enjoy
his handiwork. At least I know he's looking down and smiling. |
That's the way I felt Saturday with Tim
and his friend AJ out for a morning on this special, green
water lime rock pit. Neither young man is an accomplished
fisherman, but they both have the anticipation and they
both sense the beauty of the outdoors. There is still
enough of the "kid" spirit in them to make a
fishing trip fun! (Some of us lose that spirit -- the
inner child -- when we age, but some of us- the lucky
ones- NEVER do!)
A week ago on the Withlacoochee River, Tim and his friend
Aya and I struggled to catch a fish. We managed only two
small bass, and Tim drew a blank! I knew he was anxious
to erase the goose egg, so I figured to put him on a honey
hole full of fish! He and AJ had that same idea. |

We didn't have the kind of day I hoped
for, but we did catch 20 to 25 bass up to about 4 pounds.
That's an average of only about 8 bass each for 4 hours
fishing. Average only one bass per person per half hour.
Not bad, but not really what this pond is capable of.
I was glad we all caught fish, but I want to take them
back there on another quiet morning at the crack of
dawn, and let them tangle with one of the 8 to 10 pounders
that live in George's little bit of heaven.
