The First Challenge on Black
Bass Set Meal
When I was in elementary school, I had a friend whose father was
a Sushi shef.
My friend and I biked to a local reservoir every weekend. One
day, I felt how bass tastes like; we had to try one. We kept one
of bass we caught and brought it to his dad's Sushi bar. His dad
suggested it was dangerous to eat it raw, and he grilled it for
us. Some salts and lemons, it tasted like.... just another grilled
fish.
It's been almost 10 years since I ate bass. My wife and I decided
to try to order a Black Bass set meal at a restaurant on Lake Ashinoko
(bass was originally introduced in Japan as a food source. Since
then, Hakone people have eaten it. But Japanese basically don't
eat bass).
My set meal was... please look at the photo. It's a basic Japanese
style, rice, miso-soup, the main dish (bass) and some little more
stuff. They are served on a tray.
On the main dish, bass was served as a fillet, white sauce was
poured on the fillet, and salmon roes were on the top. It was a
bass meuniere.
And it tasted extremely excellent! It tastes no fishy, the balance
of the white sauce and bass was just fine. I tell ya what. I ate
some white fish meat at a Tokyo's expensive French restaurant, but
this bass meal was 10 times better.
Bass tastes good. I mean, it's a game fish, but most people don't
eat it. But long time ago in Hakone, locals liked the taste of bass,
and they spread the rumor as "bass doesn't taste good"
because they wanted to monopolize the fish. Now I know why they
said that. Yammy. |

Bass tasted real good, but my wife's rainbow trout's fries
weren't that good. I wanna try to eat bass again.

tried to hide my Coke under the table, but....
